Full social media integration & member directory.

At long last we’re beyond excited to announce the launch of our brand new digital home! www.LabradorWestChamber.com

We believe it was worth the wait, as we’re happy to say that we have created something that is not only beautiful, but chock-full of valuable information and resources for our members.

The site, which was created by Hello Lori Creative Marketing Studio, has been built to grow with us, as we continue to actively promote the Chamber, build our membership community and put strong focus on supporting local business during these unprecedented times.

“We’re excited to finally be able to bring this site to our members!”
JENINE JANES

In addition to the obvious visual upgrade from our old branding and website, the new site is fully mobile responsive, and in compliance with Canadian privacy regulations, including the Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation.

The new site also has a new COVID-19 resource section and new features such as member-only offers through our Affinity Program and our NEW Member-To-Member Program that we will be expanding over the next month.

In addition to launching the new site, we are excited to start work on Phase 2, which will launch later this summer. In Phase 2 we will work towards including an interactive member portal and enhanced multimedia resources including podcasts and informative and inspiring webinars for our members and the Labrador West Community.

We sincerely thank the team at Hello for their great work and can’t say enough great things about our experience working with Lori, and her team, in creating our new digital home.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the current team, and past staff members who played a roll in getting this site to life, including our Board of Directors, our Interim Manager, Brenda Armstrong, Jenine Janes, Kellie Granville, and Breanne Hickey.

 Should you wish to chat about our new website, discuss your membership, have a question about our programs and support, or wish to list a new Member-To-Member offer, please contact myself or our Interim Manager, Brenda Armstrong at [email protected] or (709) 682-6878 at any time.

Chambers Encouraging Municipalities to Support Small Business

Chambers Encouraging Municipalities to Support Small Business

Together the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce (LNCC) and Labrador West Chamber of Commerce (LWC) are encouraging municipalities throughout Labrador to offer strong support to local businesses.

“Both the Labrador North and Labrador West Chambers of Commerce actively represent the business interests and needs of communities throughout Labrador and abroad,” says LWC Chairperson Toby Leon. “We continue to advocate on behalf of our members at all levels of government through the COVID-19 pandemic. While we are encouraged by ongoing conversations with municipalities, we are hopeful more will be done. Municipalities need to ensure our small businesses are priority and we encourage each to examine opportunities surrounding tax relief, policies and grant programs to support local economies.”

A number of municipalities across the province are offering tax deferrals and discounts for the next few months. While these measures are appreciated, businesses who were mandated to close their doors in mid-March and currently collecting no revenue will not have the cash flow or reserves to pay. Businesses need relief now to recover quickly once COVID-19 measures have been lifted.

The Labrador North and Labrador West Chambers are encouraging municipalities across Labrador to consider:

  • Launching initiatives and releasing frequent communication encouraging residents to support local businesses;
  • offering tax deferrals, including discounts, to businesses until at least September 30, 2020;
  • offering tax relief (i.e. a tax holiday) for at least the months of March-May, 2020;
  • and working closely with the Labrador North and Labrador West Chambers of Commerce to receive continual and direct feedback from Labrador businesses

“This is an unprecedented time and municipalities need to employ unprecedented measures to effectively respond to immediate local business needs,” says LNCC Chairperson Andy Turnbull. “Without strong support from Labrador municipalities, some of our local establishments will undoubtedly remain closed once mandatory closures are lifted. The current revenue losses coupled with tax payments and loan repayments will be too burdensome on our local businesses.”

Now more than ever, businesses in the region need to feel supported by all levels of government, as the responsibility to support Canadian businesses simply cannot fall on the shoulders of the federal government. It is imperative that all levels of government work together to coordinate assistance for our local businesses during this immensely challenging time.

The Labrador North and Labrador West Chambers look forward to continuing its conversations with local government officials and advocating on behalf of member businesses.

Chamber Welcomes New Interim Manager

Chamber Welcomes New Interim Manager

As many of you may know, our Office manager Kellie Granville is currently on maternity leave with a beautiful baby girl.

Kellie’s commitment to our members has meant she continued to fill in during our search for a maternity replacement. We are excited to announce that we have filled the position and Kellie can now spend her days enjoying, bonding and caring for her daughter.

We are excited to announce that we have hired Brenda Armstrong to manage the Labrador West Chamber of Commerce during Kellie’s maternity leave. Brenda has availed of the SEA Program offered with CBDC to start her own business called HubLab so she brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience to our organization. Brenda is available whenever our members need her and she is excited to get to meet each and every one of you.

We invite you to drop by the Chamber office to say hello and welcome Brenda to the family!

During this COVID-19 crisis, Brenda will be working from home for the Chamber. She is still accessible through all the same means (email: [email protected] /Phone: (709) 944-3723) so please don’t hesitate to reach out and say a friendly “Welcome” to Brenda. We will be providing support for businesses on the COVID-19 emergency programs in the coming days and will let everyone know when and what we can do to help businesses in our community during this difficult time.

Welcome, Brenda! We look forward to working with you

Information on EI for employees being affected by the coronavirus

The Government of Canada has announced a number of measures to support Canadians against the Coronavirus impacts. The purpose of this post is to provide more details regarding our new EI measures as I have been receiving a number of request for Information.

1. Waiving the EI Sickness Benefits Waiting Period

The one week waiting period will be waived for EI sickness benefits claimants for whom a period of quarantine is imposed when the quarantine is:

  • Imposed on the claimant under the laws of Canada or a province
  • Imposed on the claimant by a public health official for the health and safety of the public at large, or
  • Recommended by such an official for health and safety of the public at large, and the claimant was asked by their employer, medical doctor, a nurse or a person in authority to place themselves under quarantine.
  • The term quarantine is intended to be broad and include individuals who are in self-isolation on the recommendation of a public health official, their employer, medical doctor, a nurse or a person in authority.
  • For more details on eligibility criteria, visit: Canada.ca.

Service Canada has also dedicated a new toll free phone number for Canadians under quarantine and seeking to waive the waiting period. The number is 1-833-381-2725.

2. Temporary special Work-Sharing measures

Work-Sharing (WS) is an adjustment program designed to help employees and employers avoid layoffs when there is a temporary reduction in the normal level of business activity that is beyond the control of the employer. The measure provides income support to employees eligible for Employment Insurance benefits who work a temporarily reduced work week while their employer recovers. Work-Sharing is a three-party agreement involving employers, employees and Service Canada. Employees on a Work-Sharing agreement must agree to a reduced schedule of work and to share the available work over a specified period of time.

As part of our efforts to help employees and employers affected directly and indirectly by COVID-19, we are implementing the following changes to the Work-Sharing Program that will last for one year:

  • Doubling the length of agreements from up to 38 weeks to 76 weeks;
  • Increasing flexibility for the mandatory employer recovery plan; and
  • Eliminating the cool off period between agreements so that employers with recently expired agreements can start subsequent ones sooner.

Employers are instructed to submit their completed applications by mail to their local Service Canada Centre<http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/tbsc-fsco/sc-hme.jsp?lang=eng>. For more information on Work-Sharing Agreements, please visit the Government of Canada’s website<https://www.canada.ca/…/servi…/work-sharing/eligibility.html>.
